Dream of Arcadia

Thomas Cole's 1838 vision of pre-industrialization America.
Handbag not included.
Arcadia is seen as a lost, Edenic form of life, contrasting to the progressive nature of Utopian desires. The statue on the right is a pagan statue, likely of Pan, the wild Greek god who was the companion of the nymphs. This is an outtake of the bottom left corner of the painting.
